Description:
Silver sugar bowl (part of a three-piece set, HD 2005.832-HD 2005.834) decorated with repousse and line engravings on the urn-shaped finial and lid, a raised band of flowers around the oval body just below the rim, and a medallion wreath on the two sides, and has two square C-shaped ribbed handles. The pot is marked "S&R" in roman letters in an oval for John Sayre (1771-1852) and Thomas Richards who were in partnership from 1802-1813 at 420 Pearl Street in NYC, and the "F" in a roman capitol in a square (maybe be a date letter or the stamp of another silversmith since much work was jobbed out at that time). The base is engraved, "John Hone married Johanna Stoutenburgh / December 1st 1786" in script. In 1786, John Hone (1764-1832) of New York City, the son of Philip Hone and Hester Bourdet, married Johanna Stoutenburg (1765-1838), the daughter of Isaac Stoutenburgh (b.1739) and Elizabeth Wall (d.1810), in NYC.
