Description: Watch in a gold case with a glass cover, white dial face with black numerals, two seperate dials (one for hours and one for minutes), and a sweep second hand, which was made by Tobias Morris of London for William Irish. The watch is marked "W M" with a star above in intaglio. In the 18th century, the materials and techniques invested in waches held great itrinsic value. Gold was expensive, but components like steel springs were also expensive to obtain and technically demanding to produce. The outside of the case is engraved: "This Watch was the first / one ever cleaned by / Benj. E. Cook in 1820 / then 16 years of Age." Cook was a silversmith who worked in Northampton, Massachusetts, between 1827 and 1833, where he was a partner of Nathan Storrs (1768-1839). There are also watchpapers from Cook and G. Griffen, which came with the watch; Griffen was a "Watchmaker, Silversmith & Jeweller" of Hudson, New York.
