Description:
Silver ladle with a circular bowl and double rounded drop; short chamfered section to narrow short shaft tapered to slightly downturned wide coffin-end handle; and a long midrib on the back of the handle. The ladle is marked "M. GORHAM" on back of handle for Miles Gorham (1757-1847). and engraved with the initials "A K" in large script on the front of the handle. In 1805, Gorham advertised his services to the public as a gold and silversmith "at the sign of the Eagle opposite J. Butler's Hotel" in New Haven. Gorham's shop was located on the west side of York Street, probably between Chapel and Crown Streets. He was a prolific silversmith, manufacturing sugar tongs, spoons, ladles, and church silver. His best known commission was a set of six chalices for the First Congregational Church in Derby, Connecticut.
