Description:
Silver tablespoon with a down-turned, oval with pointed end handle, bright-cut edge and incised line along the length of the handle, elongated oval bowl, and oval drop and shell on the back of the bowl, which is marked "B. PIERPONT" stamped on the back in a shaped rectangle for Benjamin Pierpont (1730-1797), and engraved "Samuel Parkman Tuckerman" on the back of the bowl and "SPT" on the front of the bowl. Samuel Tuckerman (1819-1890) was born in Boston, where he studied music and became organist and choir master at St. Pauls's Episcopal Church in 1840. He studied cathedral music in England from 1849-1853, and from 1856-1864, as well as spending several years in Switzerland. His works include: "The Episcopal Harp" (Boston, Mass., 1844), "The National Lyre" (Boston, Mass., 1848), "Cathedral Chants" (1858), and "Trinity Collection fo Church Music" (Boston, Mass., 1864).
