Description:
One of a pair of Dutch delft candlesticks decorated with flowers in purple, yellow, blue, green, and orange-red. One is marked on the octagonal base "J:H:F / 1183", and the other, "J.H:F / 1184" for Johan Herman Frerkingh; the "J.H.F." mark was registered in 1764. Frerkingh started working in " 't Fortuyn" in 1762 and became production manager (and possibly co-owner) in 1775; he died in 1798. When the factory was sold in 1791, the site became a corn liquor distillery. The Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels, Belgium has a delft candlestick in its collection with a similar shape (based on European silver candlesticks of the period), decoration, and mark: "J:H:F: / 1185". It is not known what the numbers represent, for example, a production count of the number of items decorated by Frerkingh, number of candlesticks produced, etc. The candlesticks are decorated with delicate flower and leaf sprays; the octagonal base edge and base of the knopped shaft are surrounded with purple scrolling sprigs.
