Description:
Large turned treen or wooden bowl with distinctive grain patterns. The bowl has a deep interior well and 3/8" rim. The exterior is marked with a molded edge marked with an incised groove just under the rim and a cut-out flat, foot ring. Treen, which was a very inexpensive choice for tablewares, was turned or carved from locally available wood and cost only a few pence to purchase. Although used by many, by the mid-18th century wooden ware dishes had become considered unrefined for a genteel dining table.
