Description: English Staffordshire oval platter with scalloped rim and flat base; decorated with transfer printed, "flow blue" scene of landscape with mountains and oriental buildings in the background and two seated ladies and a man in the foreground; border is transfer printed with four landscape vignettes and rococo floral design. Starting in the 1840s and continuing throughout the 19th century, "flow blue" ceramics were extremely popular in the American market. The cobalt blue tended to run because the glaze mixtures containing florine and chlorine were smeared onto the protective boxes or saggars. Printed on the underside in underglaze blue is "ENGLAND" and an eagle and cartouche mark "BURGESS & LEIGH/ NONPAREIL" and beneath "[MIDD]LEPORT POTTERY", and the impressed mark "PG". According to family tradition of the donor, the teapot belonged to her grandmother, Mrs. Allethaire Estey (187?-1953) of Brattleboro, Vermont. Harry Estey's family were residents of Brattleboro, and they met while Allethaire's family summered in Brattleboro. Her family was from Louisville, KY.
