Description:
English delft circular plate decorated in blue with a red rim edge. The plate is decorated edge-to-edge with the scene of a shepherd and his sheep listening to a man playing a horn while seated under a tree. The scene is framed by the arching tree branch with scrolling twigs and a large flying insect over the sheep on the right. J. Horne illustrated this plate and a related tile also produced in Liverpool; E. F. Garner showed a similarly-decorated shard found in Liverpool with two matching plates; and O. Van Oss attributes the design source as a Berchem etching, 'Du Jardin'.
