Label Text:
As Professor of Renaissance Art History at Smith College from 1916 to 1960, Clarence Kennedy began taking photographs of antique, Renaissance, and Baroque sculpture to provide study aids for his students.

Between 1928 and 1932, Kennedy published seven volumes in his series Studies in the History and Criticism of Sculpture. These portfolios featured commentary and detailed images that closely recorded the important elements of the chosen sculpture from all sides. Although they were originally intended as a teaching tool, Kennedy’s photographs, with their gentle lighting and sensitive printing, imbue the sculptural works with a measured poetry that brings them alive. These images also show detailed views that were not accessible to contemporary viewers of the sculpture.

This cabinet includes selected images from the eighth volume, which was never published (however, the photographs were circulated). The Tomb by Antonio Rossellino for the Cardinal of Portugal focuses on the carved details of the cardinal and the putti (angelic babies or cherubs) seated at the base of the fifteenth-century tomb in Florence, Italy.
