Description:
Chippendale armchair made of maple and birch, which was originally mahoganized. The carving of its arms, splat and top rail together with its molded sides and front legs, result in a quality not usually found in splint or rush seated chairs. This armchair has the lightness, decororation, and grace of a city production. The chair has a shaped crest rail with a center carved shell over an owl eye splat; shaped half-arms with carved knuckles; woven splint seat; and grooved Marlborough-style front legs, four grooved stretchers, and two plain, flared rear legs. The cushion is covered with damask and a fringe.
