Description:
One of a set of six mixed-style side chairs. The slip seats are each covered with fabric that was probably embroidered in India, and later quilted in England. The chairs were upholstered by the firm of Ernest Lo Nano in New York, probably in the early 1950s. After the Queen Anne vase-shaped backs were introduced into the colonies in the 1720s, they were often combined with the older William and Mary rush-seated, block-and-vase turned bases that were popular on banister back chairs. This mixed style was popular through the eighteenth century; the key to their dating is based on their base turnings. This set represents that mixed style with their Chippendale eared top rails and Queen Anne vasiform splat, cabriole legs, and compressed stretchers. The high, platformed discs under the pads of the two front feet indicate a date well-after mid-century.
