Label Text:
Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Ellen Monroe, class of 2015:

This highly finished watercolor bridges the gap between drawing and painting. As a work on paper, it falls under the care of the Cunningham Center for the Study of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, but Granet’s use of watercolor, a wet medium, as well as his use of color, make this piece look more like a painting than a drawing. The subject matter is typical of Granet in its depiction of a vaulted structure. The figures are dwarfed by the architecture that dominates the composition. Granet sold many romantic views like this as souvenirs of Rome.
