Description:
Landscape with shepard and animals

Label Text:
During his career Nicholas Berchem executed over fifty etchings of pastoral subjects, mostly picturesque scenes of herders tending animals. Although Berchem has never been documented as traveling to Italy, his landscapes often carry an Italianate air, particularly noticeable during his work after the 1650s. The background in The Flock at Rest, however, appears more typically Dutch, as seen by the distinctive form of the pollard willow to the right of the standing shepherd. Berchem also often borrowed his animals from the compositions of his more famous contemporary, Paulus Potter.
