Label Text:
One of the earliest of the artist's works preserved in the museum's collection, "Twilight on the Maine Coast" was painted when Tryon was twenty-five years old. The previous year he had left his job in a bookstore to devote his life to a career in art. A friend, who had recently moved to Connecticut from Missouri, advised Tryon that he was making a terrible mistake. "You will probably starve to death in a garret," he said. The artist did not heed Mark Twain's advice.
