Label Text:
In 1891 Tryon painted a portrait of himself, a vigorous man of forty-two, on the opposite side of a fishing scene he had done in France. The fishing scene had been hidden for years, until some minor conservation treatment in 1981 uncovered it. Tryon was an avid fisherman most of his adult life, and this painting may depict a tributary of the Seine outside Paris where Tryon was fond of fishing during his years in France. As Linda Merrill has written, the fishing scene "is undoubtedly Tryon's true self-portrait, one which, unlike the other, is representative of his personality."
