Label Text:
New York artist Richard Artschwager based this painting on a photograph taken from the New York Post. Although it looks mechanically produced, it was painted by hand. The coarse surface of the Celotex, a pressed paper compound, produces a grainy texture like a newspaper reproduction. The use of formica instead of traditional canvas further reinforces the impression of a mass-produced object. Separating the building from its urban surroundings, Artschwager deliberately creates a sense of disconnection. The windows and balconies appear to sag, and the gritty grayness suggests not an up-scale modern building but something isolated and left behind.
