Description:
One piece, gothic-style embroidered and flounced, rose silk dress and a matching pleated collar, which is a V-shaped overpiece or modesty piece to set around the neckline with covered buttons down the front and lined with cotton, and Chinese-style, hand embroidery at the waist and on the two-tiered, full skirt. The fitted, boned bodice comes to a "V" at the waist, and has capped sleeves and hook and eye closures down the bodice back. There is one detached capped sleeve that is kind of an oversleeve. The skirt has gauge pleating around the waist and a stiffened muslin lining around the skirt bottom to give it fullness. According to the donor, this dress was reported to have been worn at an imperial ball in Germany by an ancestor of Laura Dudley Maynard, the first wife of Richard Maynard.
