Description:
Woman's formal, two-piece dress of maroon silk faille with a pink silk brocade down center front of both pieces. The sleeves feature full leg o' mutton heads, and very fitted forearms. Bodice front decoration consists of two self fabric pleated sashes extending from shoulders and coming to a 'V' point at center front. A center front strip of pink brocaded silk ends in a plastron at bottom of bodice. There is a high collar, which fastens center back and has two same fabric bows covering the closure. The bodice itself opens in the front, with hook and eye closure. There are two decorative matching faille rosettes at lower back edge of bodice. Inside of bodice is lined with maroon taffeta. There is boning (11) that may be actual bone. There is a waistline stay, with metal eyes to correspond to metal hooks on skirt waistband (for extra skirt support). The skirt is gored and is similar to a fan skirt described in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 2 book on page 12A, with pleats in the back at the waistband. Also at back waistline of skirt is center back placket 10 1/4" long. Skirt has a slight train of 5 1/2". The pink silk brocade insert continues 2.0" above waistband and down the center front of the skirt. All along brocade in skirt, as well as skirt's hem, is a continuous border of double-layered pinked ruffling, 2.0 and 3.0" deep. The skirt closes center back with hook and eye closure, and has two hooks corresp. to eyes in bodice waistband. The skirt is lined with cotton on the side and front gores. A linen waistline tape measures 1/2" wide. A facing of purple taffeta at inside hem ranges from 4 1/2 - 16.0" wide. The entire back of skirt has horsehair lining. There is an inside tape at skirt back, to hold this fullness in back. Tape is 1.0" wide and extends from side seam to side seam. Skirt then lined with a purple taffeta petticoat with a 6.0" gathered ruffle with pinked edges. Petersham or waistband on bodice inside stamped "Snyder/ Cleveland, Ohio." The maker was probably Mrs. Joseph Snyder (nee Christine Chirin?), who was born in France before her career as a dressmaker in Ohio.
