Description:
Fragment of a wedding dress worn by Mercy Leonard who was born in Harwick, Mass. in 1751, and married Jonathan Flynt of Monson, Mass., in 1772. The piece descended in the family until it was given to Edward T. Perry who donated it to the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Conn. in 1955. In 1971, the Wadsworth Atheneum (then Director, James Elliot Jr., and Textile Curator, J. Herbert Callister with the approval of Mrs. Perry) gave it to HD in memory of Henry N. Flynt. The flroal spot motifs of the embroidery also suggest that this fragment could have been part of a bed curtain.
