Description:
Nailed six-board pine chest with a hinged lift top supported by sawn "boot jack" end boards and ornamented with swirling paint to simulate mahogany. The chest originally had an inside drawer, which has been removed. The chest bears the paper label: "J. G. BRIGGS/FURNITURE WAREHOUSE/Charlestown, N. H." Joseph Briggs (b. 1805) was a member of the Briggs family of cabinetmakers who worked in Keene, New Hampshire, and Montpelier, Vermont. His father, Eliphalet, Jr (1788-1853), made the 1810 bureau (94.019) in the Historic Deerfield Collection. HD also has a dressing table (2000.40) by Joseph.
