Description:
Veneered and crossbanded bowfront chest of drawers or bureau, signed: "Eliphalet Briggs jr, Keene, January 9th, 1810 made this $19 Doll." The chest has the original brass hardware signed "HJ" (Thomas Hands & William Jenkins, Birmingham, England, 1791-1803). The bureau is significant since it is signed by its maker, Eliphalet Briggs, Jr. (1788-1853), of Keene, New Hampshire. Its original hardware is also documented to the manufacturer; and it was owned by Nina Fletcher Little. The bureau descended in the Hedge family of Quechee, Vermont. A card table signed by Eliphalet Briggs is in the Garvan collection at the Yale University Art Gallery. A blanket chest (95.32) and dressing table (2000.40) labeled by his son, Joseph G. Briggs, Charlestown, New Hampshire, is owned by Historic Deerfield. The rectangular chest has four graduated cockbeaded drawers; over two lines of inlay on the top of the valenced skirt continuing to four out-flared bracket or French feet.
