Description:
Dutch delft tile decorated in purple with an encircled scene of the naked Adam and Eve who is holding an apple, under the apple tree with a snake twined around the branch and trunk, and the inscription "GENES 13 V 6" along the bottom. Each corner of the tile is ornamented with the ox-head design, a pattern of scrolls, dots, and lines. There is a piece of newspaper listing dress goods glued to the back. According to the donor: "Corners are ossekop but without bars and altho Ray shows one (fig. 40) he does not comment and we may suppose that 836 is Dutch as the sub-scription "GENES 13 V 6" might show. From Mrs. Rice Cheshire, Conn. Two corners broken" and "Hanover/guring/Bib nos/is Dutch." John Austin notes that more than 500 scenes from the Bible have been identified on Dutch delft tiles. Traditional Utretch tiles have a dotted, stem oxhead.
