Description:
Letter written in ink which came with the photograph album, HD 89.130. The letter is has "Sunderland, Mass. Sept. 27th, 1855 on the top, is addressed to "D r Sister," and is signed "Nannie." "Nannie" appears to be Nancy Henderson Hubbard (1823-1863), the first child of Ashley Hubbard (1792-1861) and his second wife, Betsy Dole Hubbard (1794-1862), whom he married in 1822 after the death of his first wife, Nancy Henderson Hubbard in 1821, and the granddaughter of Caleb Hubbard (1754-1850) and Lucretia Ashley Hubbard (1767-1853) of the Plumtrees section of Sunderland, Mass. Nancy's portrait as a girl by Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900) is in the HD collection, HD 2005.12.2. She started writing verses very early, which she signed "Viola"; one of those, "Valedictory Hymn, Sung at the close of the Select School, North Amherst, Nov. 21." (where she graduated) is in the HD 2005.12.2 data file. She married Ansel W. Kellogg of Oskosh, Wis. on Sept. 14, 1857, and is buried in the North Amherst cemetery. "Dear Sister" is probably her younger sister, Elizabeth Peck Hubbard (b.1830), whose portrait was also done by Field, HD 91.002, and who married George Alvord (d.1882) of Winsted, Conn. on June 1, 1863, or possibly Elizabeth Boyd Hubbard of Winsted, Conn., who married Nancy's brother, Stephen Ashley Hubbard (1827-1890).
