Description:
One of two silver tablespoons with a large oval bowl, which is marked "I.V" in a rectangle and the letter P" three times for John Vernon (1755-.1845), and engraved with the initials "LMD" (or "LMQ") in script on the front of the handle. Vernon was in partnership with Thomas Underhill from 1785-1787, and by himself at various addresses until about 1817. Both Vernon and silversmith John Targee (fl. c.1797-1828) purchased flatware wholesale from Teunis D. DuBois of Monmouth County, NJ, and used an unusualy pseudo-hallmark, variously identifed as a ship with billowing sail or a battle-axe or a letter "P." See also HD 75.501.
