Description:
Framed and matted photograph of Miss C. Alice Baker (1833-1909) dressed in the formal ball gown, hands crossed in front, fan in left hand, and her head tilted to her right as though looking at someone while smiling faintly. When C. Alice Baker purchased the Frary House in 1890, she dreamed of restoring the home in order to hold a colonial-style ball in the tavern ballroom on the second floor. On August 25, 1892, she organized a ball which requested guests to dress in early 18th-century costume. Comparison of this black and white photograph, which is cropped from larger whole (the edge of dress to Miss Baker's right matches the dress of Miss Margaret Miller's in the other 1892 ball photographs), to 1892 Ball photographs shows that this was taken at the same time. The mat appears to be heavy paper, light gray in color; the frame is light soft wood, probably painted for a coppertone effect, with several small nail holes in upper right hand corner of frame. The frame is backed with stiff cardboard, attached with small nails with rounded heads and a hinge attached to back with small decoratively engraved plate with small tabs inserted into cardboard; the metal stand appears to be painted gold.
