Description:
Woman's summer bonnet made from bands of brown and off-white braided straw stitched together. Straw was a lightweight material for bonnets worn in warmer weather. The presence of a visor on this example added further protection from the sun's glare. Women's hats and bonnets grew in height during the 1880s and early 1890s, complimenting vertical details on dress bodices, and helping to balance out protruding back bustles found on skirts.
