Description:
Tall chest of drawers in cherry, which was originally mahoganized. It was a family piece of Maria Abigail Stebbins (ca. 1831-1902), the daughter of Zebina Stebbins (1797-1879) of Sugar Loaf and the Mill and Ruby Graves Stebbins (1796-1877). In 1858, she married Justin B. Hitchcock (1824-1890) of Deerfield where they lived in a house built by Justin (Town Lot 6). Maria Stebbins Hitchcock probably sold the chest of drawers to Miss C. Alice Baker (1833-1909) in the early 1890s. The top has a heavy molded cornice; seven banks of drawers - two short over five graduated - with replaced brasses; plain skirt; and four long bracket feet. The simple skirt and long bracket feet are often found on Deerfield area furniture, but the form itself is often associated with northern New England pieces - often found in New Hampshire. See also 69.0304 for the desk from Maria Stebbins Hitchcock and 96.007.1 for her wedding dress.
