Description:
Slant-front desk in cherry and pine, which was originally mahoganized. It was a family piece of Maria Abigail Stebbins (ca. 1831-1902), the daughter of Zebina Stebbins (1797-1879) of Sugar Loaf and the Mill and Ruby Graves Stebbins (1796-1877). In 1858, she married Justin B. Hitchcock (1824-1890) of Deerfield where they lived in a house built by Justin (Town Lot 6). Maria Stebbins Hitchcock probably sold the desk to Miss C. Alice Baker (1833-1909) in the early 1890s. The interior has a eight open compartments, one square drawer with a carved shell and brass knob in the center; over five smaller drawers over two long curved drawers, each with brass knobs. The case has four graduated drawers with replaced brasses, plain sides, and ogee braket feet. See also 69.0483 for the chest from Maria Stebbins Hitchcock and 96.007.1 for her wedding dress.
