Description:
Woman's necklace, made of metal set with paste diamonds. Marked "Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer." This firm, which included designers Iden Claessen and Roger Jean-Pierre, was the first jewelry license undertaken by the House of Dior to expand it's market. The license, which lasted three years (1952-1955), made "unicorn brooches and Indian, antique, Georgian and Victorian styles," according to author and curator Alexandra Palmer in her work on Dior. This necklace was possibly worn by Historic Deerfield's founder, Helen Geier Flynt (1895-1986), and then added to the museum's collection as an accessory for dressed mannequins in Fabric Hall. Providence, Rhode Island, manufacturers made much of the costume jewelry for Christian Dior in the early 1960s.
