Description:
Letter signed by Andrew Belcher (1647-1717), dated Aug 2, 1697 and addressed to "Ye Honorable Commissioner, Victualing Office, Tower Hill, London." Andrew Belcher, son of Andrew Belcher and Elizabeth Danforth, was a prosperous merchant in Boston and a member of the Massachusetts Council from 1702 to 1717. His son, Jonathan Belcher (1682-1757), was Governor of Massachusetts from 1729/30 to 1741 and New Jersey from 1747-1757; his grandson, Jonathan Belcher, Jr. (1710-1776), was the first Chief Justice and a Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (1760-1764); and his great-grandson, Andrew Belcher (1761-1841), became a wealthy merchant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and married Marianne Geyer (1773-1839), daughter of Frederick (d. 1821) and Susannah Geyer of Boston, in 1792.
