Description:
English delft baluster-shaped jug with blue decoration. The jug is decorated on the front, opposite the applied strap handle, with a large, dark blue floral spray, with a center stylized petal encircled by six curving stems with leaves. There are seven incised turning rings around the 1 1/4" neck, and an incised band around the base over the flared flat foot. Two jugs of this shape have been found, both inscribed with the name and address of tradesmen. One is in the Liverpool Museum; and the other is in the London Museum, with the name of Joseph Fawsit, 57 Paddington Street, Mary-le-bone who appeared in London directories from 1805-1823 described variously as a grocer, oilman, and tea dealer. According to Jonathan Horne, 1/23/95, these jugs were made for a long time into the nineteenth century.
