Description:
Columnar, or tabernacle, looking glass with an over-hanging, molded cornice top with 16 balls, over an upper painted panel with a reverse-painted classcially-dressed young woman in a rowboat; over a mirrored panel, flanked by hollowed columnettes with a single twist. The reverse side has half of the paper label of John Kidder (1753-1835) and Joseph Carter, who joined the partnership about 1811. This style of looking glass became very popular in America after 1800. Usually featuring upper panels with scenes painted in reverse on glass, these looking glasses were well gilt and often had balls nailed under the cornice. Label reads: "Kidder & Carter, Mfrs. and Sellers, wholesale and retail at their store, Main Street, Charlestown, Mass."
