Description:
Tin-glazed earthenware plate decorated with a scene of a lady holding a basket, set within a parklike landscape featuring a classical-style urn and tree on the left and bushes and distant buildings on the right. The plate is associated with a larger group of wares, believed to have been made in London, featuring standing figures in a landscape (pointing or gesticulating), tall sponged trees, architectural features, and distant block-like buildings. A number of shards bearing similiar motifs have been located at archaeological sites at Lambeth. These wares were formally believed to have been produced at Wincanton, but this attribution is based only on a single fragment located in Winancton, which bears part of the dress of a standing woman on a plate of this group. Condition: Good other than very minor chips.
