Description: Since the late 17th century, fashion engravings communicated the current styles of clothing and accessories. Reflecting their lead in the luxury textile market, France's fashion engravings also led the way in this genre. This example is titled "Modes de Paris (no. 515)," and is a plate or engraving from Petit Courrier des Dames. The caption states "Boulevard des Italiens No. 22[?] pres le passage de l’Opera. Manteau d’Homme par derriere avec ouverture de manche recouverte de demi fausses manches," indicating the business address where one can have such a cloak depicted made, and a description of that particular garment's fashionable details. The plate shows a female and male from behind, both wearing cloaks. A lighter, smaller view of the man from the front (to show off the front of the cloak) is included in the lower right of the picture.
