Description: Queen Anne bonnet-top high chest of drawers in mahogany with three neoclassical flame and vase finials over nine drawers. The upper section has a bonnet top with a molded swan's neck crest and three carved flame and vase finials on fluted plinths, which have been added. Originally, the chest would have had a single finial at the top center. There are a pair of bookmatched, conforming-shaped panels on the pendiment over the two top short drawers across over three graduated long drawers. The lower case has mid-molding over one long drawer; over three short drawers across, with two side square drawers and a rectangular middle drawer; over the deeply reverse-scrolled apron with a center drop pendant; over four cabriole legs ending in slipper feet. The brasses are probably original. The closed back has several circular openings, over which has been pasted pages from a 1765 Marblehead, Mass. account book of a merchant to keep out dust. The primary wood is mahogany, with chestnut glue blocks, yellow pine drawer slides, eastern white pine back boards, and a yellow poplar pediment roof. The drawers are marked in grafite A through E and A through D; and the upper case drawer dividers are marked A, B, and C from top to bottom. The structure is the same as used on Newport dressing tables and a continuation of the William and Mary high chest structure.
