Description: Engraved portrait of Colonel Benjamin Church (1639-1718), depicts a younger man with natural curly hair and bangs, prominent nose, dressed in an overcoat, with a powder horn strung about his shoulders, in an oval medalion with ribbon at top and shell at bottom used as the frontispiece for "The Entertaining History of King Philip’s War" by Thomas Church. Engraved "Col. BENJAMIN. CHURCH." and “P. Revere Sc” below frame. The second edition of the book, printed in Newport in 1772 by Solomon Southwick, featured this and one other Revere engraving. Benjamin Church formed a company of rangers during King Philip's war which his son Thomas glorified in his history of the war. Revere based his portrait of Church on that of English poet Charles Churchill (1732-1764). Condition: image has been torn from a book, the print is somewhat toned or stained overall, the left hand side edge is torn is a couple of places and is irregular, the right hand side is irregular.
