Description:
Woman's shoe made of leather and lined with either linen or cotton. The pointed toe, diminutive latchets (for tieing), and the flat heel suggest a date in the last years of the 1790s. This archaeological fragment, found in the Munn-Williams House in Deerfield, is important because it helps to support the notion that as in more urban areas, Deerfield women paid attention, and had access, to changing styles of dress at the close of the 18th century. The shoe may have been discarded after it's fashionable life was over, or may have been concealed as a convention of superstition/good luck.
