Description:
The molded looking-glass frame has rounded upper corners, a carved and gilded gesso lining, and a scrolled crest. It is attached to two raked square-tapered standards with brass screws ending in rings. The standards are embellished with double-scored faces and turned finials. The rectangular case with flared bottom contains a single drawer with matching profile. The case is mounted on four ogee bracket feet. The drawer has two brass pulls consisting of a single ring mounted on a post and is set with a lock that lacks an escutcheon. The drawer sides are dovetailed to the front and nailed to the back. The drawer bottom is butted and nailed to the sides. The case’s pine back panel is nailed to the sides. A paper label with the ink inscription “Made/by/John Townsend/in Newport/17[?]” is pasted to the outside face of the back. Provenance: Ward, Shumway, Nadeau.
