Description:
Silhouettes were the most expedient and inexpensive form of portraiture available to New Englanders in the early 19th century. Profiles were so cheap, costing about ten cents apiece, that an artist's profit was dependent on making them as quickly as possible. Achsah Ward was born in 1831 in Sutton, MA, and died in 1903 in Webster, MA. Profile view of a young girl in a dress holding a flower, the details of her hair, collar, dress, and flower have been picked out in yellow crayon or paint, on the reverse the frame is inscribed in ink, "Achsah Ward/Age 8 yrs." and the modern paper label, "Arch. Room/#618/A. Ward/Silhouette" and "#618"
