Since their inception in the late 17th century, fashion plates served an important role in communicating changes and novelties in clothing for both men and women. This example is a fashion plate from the "Les Modes Parisiennes" series, from the American perodical Peterson's Magazine, published in Philadelphia. The series was probably original to Peterson's, with a French title to underscore its connections to up-to-date fashion. Further study may reveal whether or not the original French illustration was altered for American tastes. This plate depicts two women drawn from the front in an interior setting, possibly a salon or art exhibition. The woman on the right wears a blue dress. The plate is partially hand colored. "LES MODES PARISIENNES/ FEBRUARY/ 1865./ Engraved and Printed by Illman Brothers."
