Description:
Set of the prints of the four continents: Europe, Africa, America, and Asia. The images are mezzotints, transferred to the glass by adhering the front side of the print to the reverse of the glass with shellac. The paper layer was then removed and oil-based paint applied on the reverse of the remaining image, in broad areas of color to "colorize" the otherwise black and white images. All four have distortions in the glass typical of the early manufacturing process. The frames, which are a set with nearly identical materials and workmanship and are probably original, have solid Brazilian rosewood edgings and veneers and light-colored tropical (unidentified) hardwood veneers over a pine substrate. Each continent is represented by a standing woman, with its name inscribed at the bottom. This set of prints has been trimmed along the lower edge so that the publication information is not visible. Similar prints read, "Asia/ London, Pubd. By C & T. Stampa & Co. Kirby Strt., Hatton Garden, Decr. 1 1804" Asia is represented as a classically draped woman with a robe trimmed in fur, she has a turban head dress with a crescent, pearls, and feather plume, she holds a staff in her right hand, in her left she holds a book, in the distance are Egyptian pyramids and sailing ships.
