Description:
Woman's one-piece, back fastening evening dress dating to about 1854. The dress, one of two worn by Julia Trowbridge Bancroft (life dates) of Chesterfield, Massachusetts, features a wide, shallow neckling, short pleated sleeves, a fitted bodice with a round, slightly elevated waistline, and a pleated,full skirt. The fabric is a yellow and white printed, horizontally striped, lightweight, plain weave silk. The white bands are filled in with polychrome small floral buds that are printed to appear as warp-printed, or chine, designs. This dress, and another in the collection (2008.4.8) were worn by Trowbridge as part of her wedding trousseau after her marriage to businessman ? Bancroft in 18??
