Description:
Powder horn inscribed: “HANRY . TURNER / His . HoRN . Made . Ye 1781.” Although made late in the Revolution, this horn is inspired by Siege of Boston examples and the whimsical work of Jacob Gay. The hunter dressed in detailed 18th century clothing is especially interesting. The calligraphy is neatly carved, but not accomplished and the letters vary in size and do not conform to the guidelines. There is no record of Henry Turner’s service before 1778, but in January 1778, he enlisted in Colonel Seth Warner’s Vermont Regiment of Green Mountain Boys, and was commissioned a lieutenant in 1781.
