Description:
Thrown, red earthenware jar with flat bottom, turned edge to the base, globular-shaped body, outcurving rim, large mouth, covered all over with dark manganese black lead glaze, inscribed on bottom of jar in red paint, “5.” And in ink “Col./ Bennington/ Vt. 1910.” And in pencil [illegible?]. Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Condition: some glaze loss on shoulder. Original Gates notecard for #5 reads, "Jug/ Col. thru Olson E. Brookfield, Mass. 1911 7 in. 2 incised rings around top and 2 around neck./ Red clay: dark brown glaze with greenish cast. Handle incised." [appears to be for a different #5 object]
