Description:
Woman's unlined bodice, known as a waist, made of white cotton that is printed with an all-over tsmall gold star design. The design of the garment features a high waist and is collarless. The bodice, which secures down the center front with black molded buttons (possibly gutta percha, an early plastic) is machine-sewn. Darts from the elevated waistline band provide shaping without cut seams. The garment is an important survival of more practical day garments worn by women in the mid-1860s. The waist would have been paired with a cotton, wool, or silk gown of the period.
