painted oval containing upper torso portrait of man facing 3/4 toward proper left, wearing red coat with red best and buttons, white neckpiece with lace ruff and white powdered wig; 2004 appraisal identifies the sitter as William Northey (1722-1779); also confirmed by email from Hugh Belsey, curator of Gainsborough house (March 2021)
