Description:
Girl or young woman's white cotton dress that features back-fastening and an elaborately embroidered hem. There is also embroidery on the narrow delf fabric waistband, and the bands that terminate each short sleeve. White the body of the garment itself dates to the early 19th century, the sleeves appear to be a later addition; the cotton is not as fine as that of the bodice and skirt, and newer stitching sets each sleeve into the armscyes. The garment nonetheless is an example of outstanding embroidery used in clothing at the turn of the 19th century.
