Description:
Woman's cotton day cap of fine sheer white cotton mull with cotton embroidery, which is an excellent example of late 18th- early 19th century handmade needlework. Brim and crown are made in separate pieces. Crown is 5.5 wide and 6 tall, probably not intended to go over a tall hairstyle. Brim (measures 8" from crown to edge at top of head; 27" around front edge) and bavolet (back neck ruffle or Bivoulac? 3.5" wide) are made in one continuous piece and are embroidered with a floral pattern in french knots and satin stitch (Ayrshire embroidery). Eyelets are filled in with a fine needle lace work. Picoted edge finished in blanket stitch. Undecorated self ribbon ties (fine hem around all sides) measure just under 2" by just under 16", have rounded edge.
