Description:
Needlework sampler done in silk embroidery done in satin, double cross, long-arm cross and cross stitches on a plain linen ground, which is inscribed "Hannah Lester is / my name and with / my needle wrote / the same in the / tenth year of my / age 1774 ID." Nothing is currently known about Hannah Lester. The sampler has five rows of the alphabet and the numbers 1-8 over the inscription, and another four rows below in the inscription ending the letters "EP," both sets without the letter "J;" and a four-sided serpentine border. The needlework is sophisticated with its Greek key design and serpentine strawberry band. The letter "j" is missing since it was fashionable to use the letter "i" for the letter "j" during this period.
