Description:
Man's three piece suit made from a figured silk in green, yellow and red. Suits like this, where all three pieces are made from matching material, were sometimes referred to in the eighteenth century as ditto suits. The selvages of the silk fabric contain horizontal stripes of yellow and red, suggesting the green is the warp. The lightweight silk and its lighter weight lining (absent from the breeches) suggest this was worn as a summer or warmer weather suit. The coat features nine self fabric covered wooden butons, with only the top two corresponsing to worked, functional button holes on the proper left side. The coat features two ample pockets, each accessed under a side-back, hip level pocket flap. The coat also features a small (1.75" tall) standing collar, and close cuffs on the sleeves. The breeches fasten center front with a button closure, no fall front. Adjustment for fit is achieved through a gusset and lacings at the center back. The side front flaps allow for a smooth fit, as well as providing pockets. A third pocket area is found on the proper right side seam.
